I’m an extrovert but I haven’t always been as big of an extrovert as I have been in the past.  In the beginning of my career I was pretty afraid to talk to people who were elevated in status over me.

I had to face the fear over the past 10 year.  One of the best ways I’ve been able to do this over the past couple years is giving myself an out.  I make myself do uncomfortable things for 30-60 minutes and then allow myself to leave. This allows yourself to mentally put in everything you’ve got and have a cut off time.

When you go to an event, give yourself an out. Set a specific time during the event that you can leave. If the event goes for three hours, tell yourself that after one hour you can leave, but during that hour you are the most extroverted person in the room. You only have to do this for 60 minutes, so go do it!
